2007; Landmarks Contemporary Projects, Powel House Museum, Philadelphia, PA The sculptural installation extended throughout the first and second floors of the historic house. Casts of shoes, writing implements and books were interspersed with both original artifacts and their reproductions. Each book was printed with selections from Eliza Leslie’s Behaviour Book and images of Elizabeth Powel. A soft female voice reciting manners appropriate to each room could be heard emanating from the fireplaces.

Description:
This article analyzes the Civil War sculptures of John Rogers, particularly Taking the Oath and Drawing Rations (1865), his most critically acclaimed work and his personal favorite. In Taking the Oath, Rogers proposed a compassionate, conciliatory attitude toward the contentious issue of Reconstruction by invoking the model of a sentimentalized family. This work was one of about eighty "Rogers groups," mass-reproduced cast-plaster sculptures that became a common expression of middle-class taste and values. Taking the Oath offered a prescription for healing the wounds of the Civil War while leaving traditional social hierarchies reassuringly intact.

The image of the macaroni in the 1770s acted both as a cautionary tale and a secret exemplar for the rising middle classes, as they debated how to become urbane cosmopolites while remaining authentically British. The medium of caricature was crucial to this debate, since individual portrait caricature not only unmasked the macaroni’s inauthenticity, but also, and paradoxically, made a desirable spectacle out of his eccentric individualism. In these caricatural images, the macaroni’s hair functioned as a potent and multivalent symbol, representing both fashion and artifice, and blurring the boundaries of gender, class, and nationality. Thus, macaroni caricature in the 1770s was deeply implicated in the contemporary fascination with character and the evolution of the modern self.
